Investigation and public election of UC Regents is needed and the state legislature is powerless to enact any reform. These officials have no checks and balances. These positions are political rewards and must have a public oversight committee to keep them in check. Originally these positions were to be selected by the Governor of California to avoid political influence. Now that is the very reason they are selected. Wives/husbands of these members are powerful politicians and corporate heavies. They operate in an environment that has no public control and yet make decisions that affect the entire population of California and the global higher education system. Although it is primarily an issue for Californians to decide, there is no way to regulate the Regents without federal intervention
