Gun ownership incurs costs for society. In order to help offset these costs, gun owners could be asked to pay a yearly premium to federal (or state) government. This "gun insurance" could then be used to help cover healthcare and/or grievance costs for innocent victims of gun crimes. These monies could also be used to help fund the ATF in order to help better enforce existing gun laws. This insurance could be instituted for assault weapons only, or all guns, or different rates for different types of guns. We petition the administration to consider this type of idea in the current discussion on gun control.
