The evidence of widespread fraud in the mortgage market is now well-documented and reported thanks to investigations by groups like Propublica. Yet while many victims have lost their homes, there has not been even one instance of any fraudster going to jail. And worse, the settlements currently under consideration by the DOJ all include blanket immunity deals that ensure the worst offenders will remain free.
In a society where justice is meted out equally, without fear or favor, all people who are found to have broken the law have to bear the consequences for their actions. We ask that you direct the justice department to pursue criminal charges with the intent to win jail time for those found guilty of the worst offenses, and stop pressuring the states into granting the banks immunity.
