A Nigerian human rights organization, the South-East Based Coalition of Human Rights Organizations (SBCHROs), estimates that at least 80 peaceful and unarmed pro-Biafran protesters have been killed by Nigerian security forces under the directive of the federal government between August 30, 2015 and February 9, 2016, while about 400 others have been arrested, detained, charged or imprisoned.
Among those detained is Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), one of the organizations that have been clamoring for the restoration of the sovereignty of the Republic of Biafra which was brutally taken by Nigeria in the genocidal 1967-1970 Biafran War. He has been held in detention since October 18, 2015, despite subsequent court rulings that deemed it illegal.
