Pharmaceutical companies commonly purchase the rights to prescription drugs and immediately hike their prices in order to turn a profit. These price hikes are immoral in their attempt to take advantage of serious illnesses and can result in patients being unable to afford the care they need. The most recent example is a drug called Daraprim, acquired in August by Turing Pharmaceuticals. Turing immediately raised the price to $750 a tablet from $13.50, bringing the annual cost of treatment for some patients to hundreds of thousands of dollars. A congressional inquiry needs to take place and efforts need to be made to halt these business practices when life-saving medicines are concerned.
