More and more US states -- generally those run by Republicans -- are throttling the rights of eligible voters through unnecessary voter ID laws, changes to voting hours and procedures, or simply not having enough election infrastructure to allow everyone a chance to vote. They are trying to prevent minorities, students, and other voters from casting their ballot next year. Americans would complain about this happening in other countries, but what about here? President Obama should invite experienced elections observers -- for example, from the OSCE, the European Commission, or the Commonwealth -- to observe primary and general elections in those states in 2014, and to report on what they observe. Maybe some shame and embarrassment will help bring sensible election reform to the USA.
