African American women bear the burden of financial and time investments in chemical relaxers to their naturally kinky hair. In aggregate these products cost nearly half a trillion dollars and many transfer money out of the African American community and into the pockets of multi-national corporations. In addition, recent studies have linked the chemicals in these products to adverse health outcomes because of their endocrine disruption compounds which may lead to uterine fibroids for women and early on-set of menarche for African American girls.
The First Lady of the United States has a unique position to impact the health and beauty choices of American women. We petition her to transition to a natural style to inspire other women in America to embrace their natural beauty and health.
