For more than a week, our nation’s busiest trade hub has sat idle as negotiations between the Office Clerical Union and the Harbor Employers Association continue with no end in sight. We urge the President to invoke federal authority to restore operations until a long-term deal is reached and before U.S. consumers, and millions of U.S. workers, begin to feel the brunt of the work stoppage. As we approach the holiday season, the clock continues to tick on the mounting danger of the situation, signaling the prospect of unparalleled losses for U.S. manufacturers, U.S. retailers, and the millions of Americans employed by them. We call upon the President to get directly involved in these critical negotiations, and if necessary, utilize Taft-Hartley to restore port operations.
