Being as the people of the South exercised their right of self-determination by withdrawing from the Union in 1860 and 1861 and formed the Confederate States of America, an independent nation, and that the government of the United States then waged an illegal war of aggression which devastated the territory of the Confederate States and resulted in the deaths of more than 300,000 of its people, We formally request that the President of the United States, speaking on behalf of the Government of the United States, issue a formal apology to the citizens of the former Confederate States for the invasion of its territory and all crimes committed against the people of the South by the armed forces of the United States.
