Swords have been key weapons through-out military history prior to the 20th century. They have practical uses in combat to this day aboard Naval vessels and will continue to have practical uses when combat enters the vacuum of space. Additionally, sword fighting itself is a distinct style of combat which the armed forces should undertake to preserve. This would have the practical use of enhancing the image of the armed forces. Overall, it will soon be clear that we are in a period of time when swords have less of a use in combat but are not obsolete. An analogy would be to say that America's anti-air craft systems are not rendered obsolete by the fact that the war on terror does not currently require them.
