Sharks are a critically endangered apex predator in the ocean. Sharks are taken by commercial fishermen mostly for their fins. These fins are used to make shark fin soup. No other part of the shark is used. Sharks are frequently released alive after their fins are cut off to die a horrible death in the open ocean. This practice is barbaric and may be endangering a group of animals which is essential for the health of the oceans. As first step, the U.S. should ban the practice of shark finning in our waters to set an example for good stewardship of our oceans--the oceans on which all human life depends.
