A vast number of government officials have attempted to implement new laws that would require American citizens to submit to drug testing before being eligible to receive food stamps and unemployment benefits. These bills have been introduced in numerous states (such as Florida and Tennessee), with mixed results. Currently, federal law prevents other states from following suit, as the constitutionality of these laws have been called into question.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is one of the latest politicians to promote the idea of drug testing welfare recipients. Governor Walker also happens to own a drug testing company.
In the interest of transparency, I believe we should begin drug testing our politicians. It's important for our lawmakers to lead by example.
