Starting in 1861, eleven states seceded from the United States, creating the Confederate States of America. This had a well-functioning government with 9 million people, and legislative and executive branches. These people wanted freedom and state rights as their founding fathers did. However, this new country was invaded and burned to the ground by federal troops, destroying billions in property and killing thousands. The U.S. government even took away habeas corpus rights to prevent secession in Maryland. The Confederacy just abided by the Constitution and used it's God-given rights. To this day, the U.S. has not apologized for it's actions or accepted the fact that the C.S.A. was an independent country during 18861-1865.
