In recognition of the uniquely American nature of the banjo among musical instruments. We believe President Obama should issue a proclamation declaring the banjo our national instrument. Do so would shine light on the role it has played in our musical heritage, in such quintessentially American styles such as Jazz, Old Time, Country and Bluegrass. The banjo is the result of influences both African and European coming together and reflects the way that our nation is also the result of varied elements and influences have combined to create the bright, colorful American tapestry.
