The debt ceiling is an arbitrary, outdated, and ineffective way of controlling government spending. It originally arose from the infancy of economic thought, out of which came the idea that government spending should be controlled in times of contraction. This is a well-understood logical fallacy, yet the debt ceiling remains. Its existence allows politicians to ransom the future of the nation for their own personal political and ideological gains. Furthermore, it prevents the federal government from running deficits as the economy slows, thus forcing the Federal Reserve to play a disproportionately large role in providing liquidity to the economy. We the people implore President Obama to publicly condemn the debt ceiling policy as a whole, and provide a rational explanation to the people.
