Competition in elections should advance new ideas and allow lawmakers to respond to changing attitudes on issues. Unfortunately, we currently find ourselves in a situation where an election consists of two candidates who are forced to attack one another, because the damaging of an opponent's campaign currently rewards the other candidate. Other times, the election features two candidates who both will not address important issues and solutions. Approval Voting and/or Instant Runoff Voting offer solutions to these problems by allowing independent and third party candidates to run on a more level playing field through the elimination of the "spoiler effect." It also means that all candidates must think about all voters, not just their base. Please consider advocating for these alternatives.
