On December 29, 2012 the U.S. embassy issued a statement calling for an end to violence against women in the wake of the December 16, 2012 gang rape and subsequent death of a woman on a New Delhi bus. This token gesture does little to bring actual pressure for legal reforms. The event roused social tensions and protests throughout India but evoked few statements of condemnation from world leaders. Subsequent events, including the recent rape and torture of a 5 year old girl have further exposed police inactivity and judicial softness in prosecuting these types of cases. We beg President Obama to publicly urge the Indian Parliament to reform sexual assault laws. Only a statement from the White House itself will have the intended effect and bring about true pressure for change.
