We support the US joining with 159 other nations in recognizing Palestine as a member of UNESCO, the cultural division of the UN. We condemn the withholding of $60M from UNESCO in its mission of providing educational, scientific and cultural activities to "build peace in the minds of men and women." US laws that prohibit American funding of organizations to avoid recognizing Palestine actually undermine peace efforts. According to its director general, Irena Bokova, UNESCO "supports many causes in line with U.S. security interests" from Afghanistan to Iraq, where "we are helping governments and communities prepare for life after the withdrawal of U.S. military forces."
