US competitiveness in the global market is harmed due to our use of the outdated Imperial system of units. Many industries, such as automotive and aerospace, have made the switch - showing that it can be done. Yet the majority of US businesses are "dragging their feet" - making it difficult to export machinery and technology on a global basis.
We need a "push" to convince US businesses to begin phasing in the metric system. To ease the way, existing products could be "grandfathered" but new developments, signage and documentation phased in over a 5 year period.
