The happiness of individuals and communities is not determined solely by their incomes or levels of material consumption. A single minded pursuit of wealth and consumer goods damages the environment, leads to social inequality, and alienates citizens from each other and their communities.
As a nation, we should instead be protecting and enjoying our natural, rural and urban environments. We should also focus on building stronger social bonds and communities. These connections with nature and with each other are better and more sustainable sources of happiness and wellbeing.
Instead of using neoliberal reforms to pursue GDP for its own end, we should pursue human happiness and wellbeing.
