I have researched about the treatment of mentally ill inmates in U.S. prisons and am disgusted. People who cannot differ right from wrong, have disregard for other's rights and cannot control their actions, are treated in the cruellest ways imaginable.
They reside in unsanitary and decaying buildings that have poor ventilation, light and water supply. Inmates drink water from a toilet bowl which is absolutely unhealthy! There is a major lack of psychological staff, hence there is less treatment. According to the 2001 Correctional Yearbook, from a whole of 17,460 mental health staff, only 18.4% are psychiatrists!
The U.S. government should create a new legisation that reflects the US domestic law (8th Amendment of Bill of Rights) and international law. Guide them. It is time for justice!
