Kaliningrad (Russia), in the past called Königsberg.
Until the end of World War II, the area belonged to the former East Prussia (the part of the German state of Prussia with capital in Königsberg).
The city was brutally destroyed during World War II and captured by the Red Army in 1945 and named as Kaliningrad in 1946. Its German population fled or was removed by force.
