Alexander Hamilton centralized union of business and government and wrote two-thirds of the Federalist Papers defending the Constitution. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton established the Bank of the United States, precursor of the Federal Reserve, spelling out the industrial policy that transformed America into an economic power of unparalleled strength. He opposed slavery. He demanded they become fully freed American citizens, Andy Jackson owned slaves. Harriet Beecher Stowe a leading Abolitionist, wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin contributed to the Civil War by personalizing the political and economic arguments about slavery. On June 16, 1862, President Lincoln had checked out “Stowe’s Key to Uncle Tom” which he returned on July 29. He then drafted the Emancipation Proclamation.
