We believe that the Pledge of Allegiance should retain the phrase "under God" and that coins and dollar bills should still bear the saying "In God we trust."
These references to God do not constitute governmental support of a religious establishment; nor do they infringe on anyone's right to religious freedom. The First Amendment was not meant to ban religion from public view but to protect all people's right to practice the religion of their choosing.
Mentions of God in government documents remind us that America stands accountable to standards of Goodness and Truth higher than narrow national interests. Though we have not always lived up to these standards, we must continue to pursue and publicly acknowledge them.
