While the First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.", the amendment is simply forbidding the government from having a state church. Those who wrote the amendment were trying to keep the Federal government out of establishing a national church, and keep them from meddling with state established churches.
As chairman of the Constitutional Convention, the first president, George Washington, said, “…it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor..."
We cannot expect God's favor on this country if we remove all references to Him and disregard Him.
