With an already disastrous record for toxic spilling in the Gulf, BP is being given carte blanche by the State of Indiana to continue ignoring EPA mercury restrictions and is now dumping some 20 times the allowable amount. As a result, Lake Michigan’s sparkling waters – revered by generations for its clear, clean waters - are at grave risk of becoming a murky pit of sludge. Our national, state and local governments must keep BP from heedlessly destroying an American treasure and protect our freshwater Lake heritage.
As a Hoosier born and raised on Lake Michigan’s sandy shores, I am horrified to see our Lake threatened by corporate greed that has caused untold damage already to American waters.
