According to the 2013 USRDS Atlas Medicare patients, with CKD, incur a cost of $23,128.00 per person per year or 18.2% of the Medicare budget. (Average Medicare cost w/o CKD: $8,245.00) Extrapolate that cost over 20 million Americans. It is a huge cost to society.
Food companies already analyze their products and it would be hard to believe they would not know the phosphorus levels of their products when analyzed. I am requesting you consider discussing this addition to Nutrition Facts with food companies as a common sense way to make it easier for patients with CKD and ESRD to make wise food decisions. Providing this information and its use by patients could slow the transition of patients from CKD to ESRD and related co-morbidities.
