label internet service providers as public utilities.

Created by S.D. on July 14, 2014

The Federal Government should reclassify internet service providers (ISPs) as public utilities, as means to getting high speed internet to every citizen across the nation, regardless of the profitability of the location.

As it currently stands, there are large portions of the U.S. without access to high speed internet, or even DSL service, because the ISPs refuse to run service to those locations, as it is not profitable. This robs these citizens of access to a basic tool that is becoming an ever increasing necessity in our lives, forcing them to either accept living without internet or move into the cities, which is not an option for certain professions (farming) and furthermore should not be forced upon them. As public utilities, they would have to run service to everyone.
