We ask the Obama administration to begin laying the groundwork for a space platform similar in size and scope to the space station Deep Space 9 featured on Star Trek:DS9. This includes investing more research dollars into space-based 3D printing and general manufacturing, space-based mining, artificial gravity research, deflector shielding, and a myriad of other technologies that would be required to accomplish this goal. This space platform could act as a launching point for future Moon and Mars missions, and offer a place for civilian and professional collaboration between many nations, along with a place for significant space-based research to occur without the confines of the former space stations. Eventually a network of these could be established, allowing far-flung space travel.
