The United States ranks #33 in the world for broadband internet speed according to http://www.netindex.com/download/allcountries/. We can do better.
A large part of the problem is that it simply is not a priority for this country. Given the importance of the internet in general and e-commerce in the economy, broadband should be considered a critical infrastructure.
According to Scientific American in this article, https://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=when-will-the-internet... the demand for internet content is far outstripping the supply of fiber optic cables. By adding more fiber optic cables to this country, two problems could be solved: the problem in this article, and at the same time broadband speed could be increased much higher than it is now.
