There is a petition to change the name of the Columbus Day holiday to "Explorers Day". It wants to include all "explorers", such as Daniel Boone, Kit Carson,Lewis & Clark, Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Neil Armstrong all under this one day.
While those, and others, are certainly worthy of recognition, changing Columbus Day eliminates part of our history. Our schools no longer teach the history that many of us learned; they're replacing it with watered-down versions that reduce to meaningless the actions of our heroes and the significance of our heritage.
We now celebrate "Presidents Day", which today's children associate with nothing more than sales at their favorite stores rather than an honor to Washington of Lincoln. Don't let that happen to Columbus day
