If illegal drugs were to be legalized, then regulations could help drop the number of deaths by those drugs, the amount of inmates would decrease as those with only drug charges would be freed and tax revenue from the drug business would increase. Some illegal drugs are dangerous due to their innate addictiveness and intense side-effects, but so are over-the-counter: alcohol is more addictive then cocaine, having a higher chance of getting people physically addicted and dependent, and heroin has a lower dependent rate then tobacco; all of those substances can kill you, but the former two are illegal for having deadier LD-50 ratings ( except alcohol has a lower LD-50 than cocaine).
