Many states are now experimenting with the legalization of marijuana in order to reduce crime and refocus law enforcement's attention on more seriouse crimes. These states have also benifited from the imposition of hefty sales taxes on the substance to pay for education and public services. We propose that Marijuana be legalized at a national level and taxed at a high enough rate to offset the growing insolvency of our nation's social security system. If we continue to do nothing, our social security system may collapse in the next few decades, leaving senior citizens with no safety net to fall back on. The taxation of pot could fix this problem. We believe that people who smoke pot are going to do it regardless of its legality, and it would be best for our country to tax and regulate it.
