The United States should change its right to die laws to allow individuals who are sick or elderly to undertake a medically hastened death when their quality of life has deteriorated too substantially. Modern medicine allows for people to continue living long after they lose their independence and are forced into assisted living facilities where their dignity and freedom are compromised. Many people would prefer the option to have their death medically hastened to minimize the burden they present to their family and to preserve their dignity at the end of their lives.
