Industrial hemp is listed federally as a narcotic though it contains mere trace amounts of THC and is chemically distinct from the marijuana plant. It is a sustainable plant that can provide ecological alternatives for paper, fuel, various building products, biodegradable plastics, clothing, food, drink, ect.
Not only is hemp a cheap, sustainable alternative to paper and clothing, but has been used to make insulation, fiberboard and pressboard, and concrete.
Hemp has been experimented with to clean contaminated soil. It was used in Chernobyl in the late 1990s to help detoxify the soil at the site. Hemp also shows potential to be useful in cleaning land contaminated with fly ash, sewage, and even some heavy metals.
