The war on drugs is a complete failure. The government wastes tax dollars to fund the senseless war on marijuana. Not only would legalizing marijuana cut down the spending on the war on drugs, but it would also generate revenue through taxes. The prohibition of marijuana also violates the civil rights of citizens. John Stuart Mill articulated the basic principles of civil rights and liberty in his statement that "the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others." The prohibition of marijuana prevents no harm to others and infringes on the liberty of citizens to live life as they choose.
