Mushrooms containing psilocybin are currently illegal, treated as Schedule 1 drugs under US law. This categorizes them as having a high risk of abuse, and puts them on the same legal level as drugs like heroin and cocaine. However, medical research finds virtually no harm in these naturally-occurring fungi. They carry little to no risk for addiction or lethality, and tolerance to the mushrooms develops quickly, preventing abuse in the short-term. On the other hand, mushrooms of this sort are an important part of religious rituals and have been used since prehistory. They also have been shown in some studies to help against anxiety and depression.
Please extend the American people the basic civil right to pursue happiness through a natural substance that has not been proven dangerous.
