Police often try to use eavesdropping and similar laws to avoid accountability by making recording police illegal.
Recording police brutality is illegal in many states. The prime example is Michael Allison of Illinois who faces up to 75 years in prison for publicly recording police activities while on duty in their official capacity.
The ability to record law enforcement in their official capacities is absolutely necessary for protecting civil rights. It is a grave injustice that a concerned citizen can go to jail for recording abuses of power by police.
