Since the Defense of Marriage Act was declared unconstitutional in 2013, the nation has seen rising support for same-sex marriage. As it currently stands, nineteen states have legalized same-sex marriage, and eleven have civil unions or basic domestic partnerships. The remaining twenty four states are largely conservative states, and legalizing same-sex marriage in those states will be incredibly difficult. It is because of this that state-by-state legalization is not nearly efficient enough, especially when it concerns an issue of this nature, that should have been legalized nationwide years ago. This petition proposes that there be federal legislation that recognizes all same-sex marriages as valid, on an equal level to opposite-sex marriages.
