Denying gay and lesbian citizens the right to marry is one of the most egregious breaches of personal liberty occurring in the United States today. This petition calls for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act as well as a nationwide definition of marriage as an institution between two individuals regardless of gender. This is not a question of creed or comfort, but of compassion. That a couple on one side of a state line is married while across it they have no legal rights regarding each other is simply un-American. Let's show the world that American can once be a vanguard of human rights!
