Everyone in this country can agree that some traditions should be honored, but the tradition of denying equal civil marriage to same sex couples is not such a tradition. It defies national values, notions of tolerance, and diversity upon which our country was founded and has flourished under. It also violates multiple basic concepts of Constitutional law.
Marriage is a legal contract administered by the government, and denying same sex couples equal access to it is the creation of second class citizens by the government. No longer should the personal opinion, personal morality, or religion of anyone be allowed to make a special right out of a Constitutional protected fundamental right (Moore v. East Cleveland). It’s time to legislate equality now.
