Imprisoning thousands in expensive, life-destroying confinement with no hope of rehabilitation is not a solution to the drug problem. Legalizing drugs will bring in extra state and federal tax revenue. Over 50 percent of inmates currently in federal prison are there for drug offenses. Stringent laws, violent drug busts, vigorous prosecution, and unnecessary imprisonment of users have all proven to be ineffective and enormously expensive as means to correct drug abuse. Instead of issuing life destroying prison sentences, we can provide broken people and their families with a second chance.
