The cougar population is increasing rapidly. With the rise of cougar population comes the decline of deer and elk population. Hunting cougar with hunting hounds was very popular until a bill was passed to make the use of hunting cougar with a hound illegal in the 1990's. Hunting deer and elk is very popular and with the decline in the population makes it more difficult to hunt these animals. There are about 5 million cougars in the state of Oregon. It is expected that a cougar is to eat one to two deer a week for a healthy diet. This is not the only impact cougars have. Cougars also have been more frequently intruding the towns close to the woods putting lives in danger. With the use of dogs to hunt cougar will increase the population of deer and elk and slow the population of cougar.
