What sense does it make to allow millions of dead bodies to take viable organs to the grave or to the incinerator every year when there are over 100,000 people waiting on a list for a matching organ?
Currently, organ donation is optional and does little to help the masses who not only need transplants, but who suffer through debilitating treatments and live lives that are dominated by needles, surgical procedures, anxiety and depression.
Financially, compare the cost of one year on dialysis at approx.$400,000 (most are waiting 5-7 years) to the cost of a transplant at approx. $250,000, and you'll quickly see how not only thousands of lives but billions of dollars could be saved.
Anyone who doesn't want to donate, would simply check the box on their DL, and they're left intact.
