A beard used to be a mandatory in the US Military. Now they have to shave everyday. I believe that a man can have a beard and still maintain a VERY professional image. You can have a full beard and not exceed 3/8" in length and keep it neat and tidy on the edges. There are regulation set in place to allow mustaches and belive these should extend to also allow beards to those that choose to grow one. It is not mandatory for everyone to grow a mustache now so it would not be mandatory for a beard. Just if one chooses to grow one, then they have to adhere to STRICT guideline that will be set in place.
