At the end of slavery, France presented the U.S. with the Statue of Liberty to commemorate this momentous occasion. The original statue was of a Black woman in chains. At the time the U.S. government decided to change the features and the color of the statue when it was first assembled; the ankle chains are still visible. We think the American people have the right to know.
