Eastern Pennsylvania is regarded around the world as the birthplace of modern democracy and liberty. Yet Eastern Pennsylvanians' own fundamental rights to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, and even property, are infringed daily by gun crimes and accidents, enabled by the domination of their Commonwealth by a radically different lifestyle and politics in much of the western half or more of the State's land area. Easterners accept their inherited governmental and decisionmaking structures and processes, and seek to work within them. But were they to be torn from the Union against their wishes, their current rights and freedoms, and these structures and processes for improving upon them, could no longer be guaranteed by law and tradition as they have known them over the past 200+ years.
