Let the country go off the cliff, then propose in separate bills reducing the tax increase for those earning less than $250,000, eliminating the cuts to selected federal programs, eliminating Congress' say in the federal debt limit etc. -- and let the Republicans take the voters' wrath for opposing them. If necessary, reintroduce these measures until that party's obstructionist power is broken. Even more important than any particular measure is the long-range goal of restoring the possibility of effective government in the next congressional elections (which would also make meaningful gun control possible).
