Social Security is great concern for many new workers. Payroll taxes have gone up from 1 percent of an employee's income since its inception to 7.5 percent now. Many new workers feel that this percentage of their income will most assuredly see greater returns in even very conservative investments. Especially considering that negative returns are now longer confined to high income earners but are also threatening the middle class. This means that many workers will see less money at retirement than they had contributed to the system before factoring in lost opportunity cost.
One must also realize that employee's pay half of the contribution as well, this money could rather be spend creating new jobs or giving employee's higher wages which will in turn promote economic growth.
