This is important because we live in a country run by a democracy in which we vote for who represents us and has authority over us. Men and women are given authority over civilians everyday, but we are not voting whether or not they should be above us. If a citizen of the city knows something about an individual looking to become an officer that could make him unsuitable for the job, or if the citizen just doesn't trust said individual, they should be able to say that they shouldn't be given authority over us. Therefore why should we not be able to vote for who can keep control and peace in our city. I feel less secure, knowing I can't trust the people who are supposed to protect us, just because we do not know if a man is corrupt, but we can take away that feeling of insecurity by voting.
